WTN: Who Mourns for Adonais

by David M. Bueker » Sat Apr 25, 2026 9:16 pm

  • 2024 Apollo's Praise Grüner Veltliner - USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake (4/24/2026)
One of the more promising new world Grüners I have tried, this showed light to medium body, a noticeable white pepper note, as well as some of the green/cress elements so common to Austrian Grüner Veltliner. What did shock me, as well as my drinking buddy, was how fruity sweet the wine showed despite the virtually nonexistent residual sugar (per the back label, only 1 g/l, so essentially below the tasteability threshold). I guess the fruit got ripe, though it didn’t show with any elevated alcohol, and there was more than enough acidity for balance.
  • 2024 Apollo's Praise Scheurebe - USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Seneca Lake (4/24/2026)
Huh. Who would have thought there would be Scheurebe in the Finger Lakes. On the basis of this wine I hope someone plants more! If you told me this was a mid-price Scheurebe Trocken from Germany I would believe it. Sage, grapefruit zest - the markers of Scheurebe - in full force. I had another glass the next night, and more fruit came out, as pink grapefruit, rather than just zest. Quite remarkable, and now I am looking forward to the next vintage.

Yes, a very promising winery, although from what I have tasted, not sure they interest me enough to crack into my strict purchasing decisions. Still, I wish them all the best.

The Finger Lakes TBA is an absolute stunner, though probably not up your alley alley.

I haven't had that one. I definitely enjoy TBA-type wines, although don't often buy them. I've had their Scheurebe, Riesling and Chardonnay. The Scheurebe may have been the most impressive, but tough competition with all the German wines.

It’s more than impressive. I served it to the most experienced Riesling drinker I know, and she was blown away by it.
