WTN: Burgs, Abruzzo, and Champagne

Squid ink pasta with clams, broccoli,
2024 Tiberio Trebbiano d'Abruzzo
For me in white wines this is probably the only rival to Briords at this price range. Rich citrus and peach fruit, herby/lemongrass notes on nose, long crunch mineral finish. Tangy and long. B++

Grey sole, broccoli, gochujang root vegetables
2019 Emmanuel Rouget Hautes Cotes de Beaune Blanc
Big for HCdB, rich pear with a hint of butterscotch and vanilla, ripe but solid underlying acids, long finish. I actually like this a lot, but would never pay retail which is distorted by craze over his trophy reds, B+

Betsy’s nephew and girlfriend came over for dinner, we started with mackerel pate and the NV
Grongnet Blanc de Blancs
(to toast his new nephew, Betsy’s grand nephew). Bright green apple and pear fruit, lemon zest, solid. B

Roast chicken, mashed potatoes, salad
2008 Jadot Combe aux Moines Gevrey-Chambertin 1er
At a recent dinner we were discussing 2008s drinking well. Well not this one. I think there is excellent stuff underneath- some brooding black cherry fruit and soil notes- but this is one tight wine. For drinking now B-/C+ but I think it’s actually a very solid wine, just surly.

No wine Monday with teriyaki salmon, grilled zucchini, rice with nori and furikake, and salad

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I don't recommend holding open red Burg for days, but 50 hours later the Jadot (while showing a bit of oxidation) had more rich fruit and Gevrey dirt than night when opened.

Well that’s something!

2008 is tough. I never know when to open one, so I largely don’t. I feel similarly about 2006, though it’s a very different vintage.
