Wine room ceiling

by Peggy Campbell » Tue Mar 20, 2007 3:56 pm

Hi,
We're in the design phase of a wine room. We'd like input regarding different ceilings that you may have built.

Flat vs curved?
What material used?

Any help would be great.

Thanks, Peggy

Hi Peggy and welcome to our little corner of the world. I'm not at all sure what a "Wine Room" is, so perhaps you could help out with a bit more info. Is it a cellar in your home, where wine is stored? Is it the tasting room in a winery? Is it a special wine tasting room in a restaurant or tavern or wine bar? Is it where you make your home made wine?

Guess I should have been more informative! It's actually 2 things. It will be a room in our basement that is being built into 2 sections. The back section [with a door] will be for wine storage. The front section with an entry door will be for homemade wine making and that is the area that we are looking for suggestions for the ceiling material. The walls will be rock/stone and the floor we probably will leave as cement.

Hope this helps you help me!
Thanks for your reply.

Welcome Peggy. You have Howie's attention. He should be able to give you great advice. Let us know how the project goes.

I like arched brick ceilings and stone pillars.

OK Peggy, now we've someplace to start. Before getting to the ceiling, use something to darken any windows and avoid fluorescent light, as daylight and fluorescent light are not good for wine storage. Since I'm not familiar with your home, the size of the room in planning or how high the ceiling is from the floor, I would suggest a suspended ceiling of 2x2 panels. I would assume your first-floor floor-joists make up the ceiling now. This space may have to be accessed as wiring (electric, phone, cable, doorbells, etc.), plumbing and heating elements may have to be exposed in the future and the panels can be easily removed. The panels made of fiberglass will also add a bit of insulation and are inexpensive and easy to install. Also, depending on how you make your wine (I make all mine in glass carboys of either 6.5 or 5 gallons) you may want to acquire some rubber floor pads to lay over parts of the concrete floor where you may be setting down full jugs of wine. Keep us posted. Also - what kinds of wines do you make? Home winemaking is one of my hobbies and we have some interesting discussions about it here.
