Not all 2001 Germans are immortal

by David M. Bueker » Tue Mar 24, 2026 6:33 pm

Opened a 2001 Georg Albrecht Schneider Niersteiner Hipping Riesling Spätlese from my dad’s cellar, and I wish I had noticed that he had it many years ago. I had actually opened my few bottles shortly after release, and they were quite pleasant if not profound. This bottle was tired, and not really worth drinking. I let it sit open for an hour to see if it would revive, but no luck.

Sorry to hear that. I guess you haven't had many 2001s that showed so poorly? I've had a few such 2001 duds in recent years from restaurants, as they presumably did not have glacial storage.

Rising tides lift all boats, but some have leaks.
Most of my 2001 experience in MSR and a bit of Nahe. Was it as strong across other regions?

The vast majority of my Rheinhessen and Rheingau purchases have been great. Think Strub, Wittmann, Leitz, and Weil just for starters.
