Wagyu ribeye, mushrooms, spinach, broccoli, potatoes with ramp butter
1998 Penfolds Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon
Big and ripe but not unwieldy (14%). Cassis, tobacco leaf, anise. Good finish with a ferric edge. Integrated tannins. This is the kind of Aussie red I can drink. B+
Saturday chicken thighs with green olives and preserved lemons
NV Goodfellow Whistling RIdge Blanc de Blancs (dg 4/24)
Much more open and complete than a bottle a year or so ago. Crisp pear and lemon, chalk, touch of saline/seashell. Bright and snappy. B+/A-
2015 Domaine des Billards St Amour
Ripe black cherry, cocoa, not a precise delineated Beaujolais but not hot or flabby, time to drink. B/B+
(it was a decent match with the tajine-y chicken with olives, but I found myself wondering why I didn't open a N. Rhone)
Sunday oysters, then a ginger/lemongrasscod stirfry with green beans
2019 Lauer Kupp Fass 18 Grosses Gewachs.
Nectarine and grapefruit, spicy, balanced. Young but really tasty now, having trouble keeping my hands off. A-
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
