No wine Monday with hot honey chicken over escarole

Tuesday a St Paddy’s dinner in Tarrytown.
Pea hummus, smoked salmon, sausage
NV Soutiran Grand Cru Blanc des Blancs Champagne
New producer to me. A slight nutty oxidative note, sweet pear and apple pie, full, don’t think I’d have guessed BdB. Not the crisp BdB I cherish, but well made in a rounder style. B for me, others would likely like more

Corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes
2003 Feudi di San Gregorio Serpico ( Irpinia)
Ripe, dense, black fruit with charcoal smoke and a little cigar wrapper. Slightly pruney on finish, drink up. B

2003 Ch. Leoville Barton
So the good news is that this doesn’t come across as roasted or hot.Big cassis and black plum fruit, some pencil lead, hint of tobacco. Plenty of tannin but on riper side so not hard to drink. My only quibble is that it seems quite low acid, leading the fruit to be lush but not bright. Still, pretty tasty, and no need to hurry. B/B+

Wednesday mussels in a karee curry over udon, baby bok chop, king oyster mushrooms
2019 Alzinger Loibenberg Riesling Smaragd
Peach/nectarine, dry, ginger and a hint of almonds. Good acids, big but not unwieldy, some wet rocks on finish. I liked this a lot. B+/A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Funny story about Soutiran. Back in 2005 or so I ended up buying some. Enjoyed it.

Flash forward a couple of years, and I am at a work dinner in Figeac, France where we had a facility. The execs from the plant selected Soutiran for the aperitif. My face lit up, and I remarked that I knew the producer. The French execs and I spent the rest of the evening talking wine, much to the consternation of my boss, the senior exec, especially when we got to dinner, and the French execs handed me the wine list.
