WTN: A not-so-eminent domain

by Jenise » Thu Mar 12, 2026 12:23 pm

So yesterday afternoon I decided to re-inventory the Burgundy part of my cellar. It makes me sad to look. The days of owning certain wines are long, long gone and most of what I have aren't sought after. I did discover a '10 Chevillon NSG and a pair of Pousse d'Or Volnays I didn't realize I still had though, so it was worth doing. I froze my toes out there in my bare feet and had a massive toothache to boot, though, so in the interest of self-care when I was done I decided to pop a cork and watch a movie. Choosing on the basis of what needs to go away first, I opened this (and had plenty of backups should this fail, which I expected it to):

2018 Domaine du Prieuré Bourgogne Pinot Noir
Bought two bottles a long time ago for $18 each. Not sure why at this point. I hated the first--young/raw/grapey--and expected to hate this one but in fact it was entirely okay if you like (liked?) Smith Brothers cough drops. And apparently I do. I didn't expect to tolerate even one glass but in fact went back for a second--it went very well with the tomato-onion soup I made. Only 12.5%, if anyone wondered. The leftovers will make a fine Coq au Vin.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Ah. I remember those cough drops very well.

I was searching for a different wine and found a couple of Chopin Burgs from 195 and 1996, and a couple of Prieur Volnays from 1999. Time we did a Burg blind tasting, Jenise! Hopefully those wines will be palatable if a tad faded...

Are the Pousse d’Or wines also 2010? If so no reason to be faded. 2010 is a great vintage.

A wine from 195 is another matter!

I found some more. I have 09, 10 and 14.

But yeah, Bill, 195???? Didn't you open a '96 Chopin when we did pinots from anywhere recently?
