WTN: Two Older Petite Sirahs....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Mar 05, 2026 3:20 pm

We tasted last night at Laura's Pig+Fig some Petite Sirahs, including these two:
1. PolyMathWine PetiteSirah Calistoga/NapaVlly (13.4%) 2013: Very dark color; pretty intense blackberry/PS/bit peppery strong toasty/Am.oak bit licorice/PS bit complex nose; soft PS/licorice/peppery some pencilly/Am.oak light earthy/ripe rather simple flavor w/ light soft tannins; very long soft PS/oaked finish that mocks the flavor; a pleasant straightforward NapaVlly PS that has plenty of PS fruit but not much structure; probably not going to get much better.

2. Trentadue Petite Sirah LaStoria 2018: Very dark color w/ scant bricking; strong vanilla/Am.oak some blackberry/PS rather old-timey/Calif Red bit simple nose; soft rather hard/tannic/rough/rustic old-timey Calif Red strong Am.oak/vanilla slight peppery/blackberry/PS some rustic flavor w/ rough/coarse tannins; med.long rough/rustic Am.oak/old-timey finish that mimics flavor; a old-timey Calif red that's not particularly attractive & rather rough/rustic/coarse; not agonna improve at all.

More gerggerflit from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. This PolyMath was made by Scott Harvey when he & Dick Peterson were owners of the former Folie a Deux wnry, now owned by Trinchero Estates. I was doing a visit w/ Scott about Spring 2014 and tasted this from tank. I was quite impressed by it for its intensity & wanted to buy some from him. He sold it to us for a song (about $10/btl), bttld up 2-3 cases for us and made up this label PolyMath, as it had not yet been bttld & labeled. It was showing little signs of drying out & turning the corner.
Scott & Dick eventually sold out the wnry to Trinchero. Scott & Jana now make wines up in the ShenandoahVlly of AmadorCnty.
The Trentadue comes from old-vines on their property just West of Healdsburg. It was originally the source of the Ridge Geyserville Zin & contains a lot of Carignane. Just an old-timey Calif PS.

Wait…when did 2013 and 2018 become “older”?

My thought as well. I have Petite Sirahs back into the late 1990s and they stand up really well (definitely no rush on the Turleys!

They have started doing PS in BC made from Yakima fruit and they are lighter in style but very tasty. I intend to do a 5 vintage vertical lunch one of these days to see how they are faring.
