1993 Mazzi Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Punta di Villa - came cross five bottles of this hiding in the cellar and thought they might be over the hill, so pulled one to try. Amarone from Veneto is a somewhat unusual wine as they use the appassimento method to concentrate flavours, partially drying the grapes before fermenting them, so they come across as higher alcohol and often a bit off dry concentrated wines. This one was still fairly dark and had a nose of slightly stewy fruit (plums?), with a hint of bitter chocolate. In the mouth it was a warm, big rich wine that finished with less tannin than I had thought it might. Time to make a rich lamb stew and get another bottle out!
