WTN: Burgs, Rhones, and more at Limusina (+Barolo)

A nice group gathered at Limusina to welcome Marshall and Diane. New upscale Mexican place near Penn Station, food and service were excellent.

Guacamole and chips
2012 Philipponnat Clos des Goisses
Excellent young Champagne, peach, Honeycrisp, and chalk, a little bread dough. Elegant mousse, bright acids, long finish. A-

Ceviche
Chilled shrimp & jumbo crab
Black Sea Bass with pineapple and lemongrass

2017 Drouhin -Marquis de Laguiche Morgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er
Served a bit warm but really nice, pear tart with orange zest, a light dash of vanilla, chalk and citrus petals on finish. Nice cut and grip. B+/A-

2018 Pierre Brisset Abbaye de Morgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er
A little reductive/matchstick, warmer/riper fruit, plenty of oak. B

Squash Blossom Machete/Quesadilla
Grilled Corn Ribs with pepper honey butter
Elote Brulee

2010 Remelluri Rioja Blanco
Fairly dark and oxidative, I wasn’t a fan at first but seemed to really brighten up, with Meyer lemon and tropical fruit, a light caramel note. good length. I crossed out my C+ and left a B.

So I blinded the group with a white, and Josh was first to guess “It reminds me of a Double Zero Chardonnay from Oregon.” Bravo
2018 00 Wines Kathryn Hermann Chardonnay
Sweet pear and a hint of hazelnut, brisk acids, long mineral finish. Balanced and impressive. A-/B+

Cauliflower with takis-shallot crumble
Cheese quesadilla
Whole Red Snapper with Charred orange salsa
Grilled Branzino with salsa verde
Crispy Mexican rice with saffron crust

2010 Lafon Goutte d’Or Meursault 1er

Honied ,mature but not tired, lemon meringue and butterscotch, fun. B/B+

2021 Lafon Clos de la Baronne Meursault
Fresh, vanilla, honeysuckle and red apple. B+

Tomahawk Prime Rib with Oaxacan pasilla rub, horseradish crema
Sauteed Spinach
Long Bean Knots

2005 Patrick & Christopher Bonnefond Cote-Rotie
Ripe and a little hot, yet with a vegetal edge. I think others liked more than I did. B-

1997 Ogier Cote-Rotie
Peppery, black raspberry and cassis, long smoky finish, a pointe. B+/A-

2005 Ogier Cuvee Lancement Cote-Rotie
Young, fresh, with a lot more brightness than the ‘05 Bonnefond, redder fruit with grilled meats/bacon, a little gamebird. B+ with potential for A.

Very fun night with very fun group, nice wines, good food.

Thursday roast chicken, whole wheat cencioni with truffle/porcini sauce, broccoli
2008 Brovia Villero Barolo
I thought this was a little roasted at decanting, but with some air it calmed down nicely. Still some firm tannin, redder fruits, spicy (cinnamon and licorice), good acids. With a couple of hours air there’s some rose petals and tar. B+.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was the only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Another producer spoken about in breathless terms by LF. Looks like you didn't love this bottle, but do you have more experience? Generally a fan?

I think first Brisset I've tried.
Josh said he has liked, but mostly the reds.
Limusina had lots of pesce-vegetarian options. Food was quite good, although place is louder than my preference.

I have no firsthand experience, but Keith Levenberg has waxed enthusiastic about this producer, too.

I noticed that in your write up. A long way down until the first meat dish showed up!
