Tried these two from my archives last night:
1. Rafanelli Zin DryCreekVlly/SonomaCnty (14.1%; U) Healdsburg 1992: Very dark color w/ some browning; rather earthy/dusty/OV slightly oxidative rather tired/dried-out pencilly/oldZin light blackberry/Zin not at all unpleasant nose; tart rather acetic/acidic some oxidized slight blackberry/Zin flavor w/ ample acetic tannins; long some acetic/oxidized astringent/bitter finish that mocks flavor; still showing some interesting old Zin/pencilly character but a bit too oxidized; clearly compromised by the cork failure. The next morning, standing open all night, the oxidative character had gone leaving just a tired old Zin w/ some interesting character in the nose.

2. Schuetz Oles Zin KorteRanch/NapaVlly (13.9%; 90+ yr old vines; Y=2-3 tons/acre) St.Helena 1992: Med.color w/ some browning; fairly cedary/pencilly/oldZin light raspberry/Zin/spicy some dusty/OV somewhat tired/dried-out nose; soft fairly tired/dried-out pencilly/oldZin light raspberry/Zin flavor w/ light astringent tannins; med.long some astringent/drying tannins that follow flavor; still a bit of dusty/OV Zin fruit in there but a pretty tired Zin; not much pleasure left; well past its prime but not at all oxidized, just tired.

More kippertilt from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. The Rafanelli came from a stash of older wines I had in my son's closet. Still have another 10-12 cases to taste thru. The extras all go into my "Streets of SantaFe" program. They had been stored in there some 10-12 yrs in cases laying on their side. I took the case out & stood it upright. When I pulled the Raf btl, I noticed it was over 1/3'rd ullaged away and the loose cork had fallen into the wine probably yrs ago. So all it had protecting the wine was the metal capsule.
So I had little hope for this wine to be anything but totally dead & maderized. But it still had some interesting old Zin character and not totally undrinkable.
