Boxing day prime rib dinner:

2023 Dolum Estates Cabernet Sauvignon California
No idea the actual source of the grapes (label just says 'California'), but cassis fruit dominates with black cherry and cedar notes emerging, more like Napa than Sonoma, med-full body and nicely balanced. A youngster without baby fat, it's solid and a major QPR bargain for $15 ea.

2016 Avennia Gravura Columbia Valley Red Bordeaux Blend
A rather modern rendition of Cab Sauv with slick, sweet bluebery and cherry fruit. Lacks complexity and disappointing after the Dyer from the same vintage.

2016 Dyer Cabernet Sauvignon Dyer Vineyard Diamond Mountain
A very traditional, old school blend of classic Napa-ness from Napa legend Bill Dyer showing black cherry, cigar box, graphite and hinting at leathery tones around the next corner. Tannins are relaxed; splendid for current drinking. Decanting recommended to remove sediment, otherwise not needed--let it take the journey in your glass. A very good wine and easily the winner over the following:

2016 Avennia Gravura Columbia Valley Red Bordeaux Blend
A rather modern rendition of Cab Sauv with blue/red fruits and blueberry milkshake (oak + malo) texture. Bought these when I got invited to an industry tasting where, perhaps I was just dazzled by local wine celebrities, they tasted better than they do now.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Never heard of Dyer, but love Diamond Mountain Cab.

Bill Dyer was the winemaker at Sterling for two decades and he did make some very good stuff. Looked in the cellar and I still have a bottle of 1990 and a couple of 1992. Time to get into them!
