WTN: Five Older Forlorn-Hope Wines...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Nov 19, 2025 3:24 pm

Tried these five afore my trip back to Kansas:
1. Forlorn-Hope King-Andrews/SuisunVlly WW (11.66%; Vermentino/TrousseauGris/Chasselas/CheninBlanc/GreenHungarian; 47 cs) Murphys/CA 2017: Med.gold color; slightly fragrant sorta grapey/earthy/loamy slight pungent/Zinnias not very interesting nose; fairly soft metallic lightly grapey/earthy/stony bit mineral unthrilling flavor; a rather rustic/coarse finish that tracks flavor; a singularly undistinguished white; age isn't taking this anywhere interesting; just an earthy/boring expression of WW, reminds some of Seillon.

2. Forlorn-Hope GemischterSatz MokelumneGlenVnyd/Lodi WW (13.39%; Bacchus/Riesling/Rieslaner/Kerner; 52 cs) 2016 Med.light gold color; quite fragrant R-like/GWT-like floral/gardenias light earthy complex rather Austrian-GS quite attractive nose; rather tart/tangy bit metallic strong floral/gardenias very Austrian/GS-like some R/GWT fairly rich/lush lovely flavor; very long/lingering very GS-like finish; very much like an Austrian GS but a bit earthy/Lodi character; quite a lovely WW but doesn't show much evolution.

3. Forlorn-Hope Mataro RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (13.19%; 52 cs) 2016: Dark color w/ slight bricking; strong plummy/licorice/Maourv-like some pencilly/oak fairly earthy bit complex Mourv-like nose; rather soft/bit alcoholic strong Mourv/plummy/licorice/earthy rather classic Mourv bit undistinguished flavor w/ light smooth tannins; med.long soft finish w/ light ripe tannins; a pretty classic Mourv but not particularly interesting & rather simple.

4. Forlorn-Hope Trobairises Picpoul RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnty (12.13%; 52 cs) 2016: Med.dark gold color; rather stony/flinty/mineral/metallic very slight floral mildly interesting nose; very tart/tangy/acidic quite mineral/stoney/metallic very savory/bracing/saling quite austere no fruit flavor; med.long very austere/metallic finish that tracks flavor; a very rugged/austere Picpoul that has not developed into anything very interesting; a rather painful wine to drink; shows a bit more fruit a room temperature but still a pretty vapid/austere wine.

5. Forlorn-Hope Verdelho RHV RorickVnyd/CalaverasCnt (12.3%; 52 cs) 2016: Med.gold color; very attractive perfumed very floral/marigolds/zinnias pungent/herbal/dusty/Kansas haymow some earthy rather exotic/complex nose; fairly tart rather rich/heavy bodied/pungent dusty Kansas haymow some floral/marigolds/zinnias/pungent some herbal lightly earthy/rustic some complex interesting old-world flavor; very long earthy/herbal floral/marigolds finish that mimics flavor; much more fruit than those other two; a rather savory/rustic interesting white; needs food with it; an interesting old-world style white; a lot like a Jura white.

More geeshersplat from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. A rather mixed bag of wines. None anything really profound but some pretty interesting.
MatRorick is rather interested in obscure varieties that he regards as forlorn-hopes. He was very interested in resurecting Green Hungarian to its former glory. He took some cuttings of the variety from the Library Vnyd in St.Helena & convinced Roger King to plant a few rows for him. He never bttld it as a single varietal that I am aware. I tasted a few from barrel & found them unremarkable. So much for former glories of Gus Sebastiani & Fred Weibel.

Yup, David....F-H is still around. But their WebSite looks rather stale. Not much in the way of new wines.
