WTN: Mixed bag

by Jenise » Fri Nov 14, 2025 1:07 pm

From a variety of social events over the last two weeks:

2018 Reichsrat Von Buhl Riesling Sekt Brut Pfalz
In a good place, dry and cidery, but I don't see any point in aging these further.

2023 Fritz Kupelwieser Lagrein Trentino
Dark berry, baked earth, heavy body, crunchy acids. Needs time.

2021 Constant Crush Wine Cabernet Dorsa Limited Addition Eola Springs Vineyard Eola - Amity Hills
Dark, saturated and young. Leftovers the next day showed some alarming vinegary phenolics. Not thrilled.

2016 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spätlese Nahe
Lightly fizzy, great nose, nectarine and kumquat on the palate, rich but on the dry side for a spat.

2021 Vie di Romans Chardonnay Vie di Romans Friuli Isonzo
Lemon and the water leftover from cooking corn on the cob, minerally and dry. Nice.

2022 Hofgut Falkenstein Niedermenniger Sonnenberg Riesling Kabinett trocken "Munny" #9 Mosel Saar Ruwer
So dry we suspected it of being a GG, but it's not underripe. Just has extra class and heft for a Kab.

2022 Marcel Deiss Alsace Ribeauville White Blend
Blend includes Reisling, Sylvaner and Pinot Blanc. Elegantly loaded with limestone chalkiness and minerality. My favorite white of the night.

2022 Evolve Spontaneity Okanagan Valley VQA White Blend
Almost no color, on the palate clean and bright, white peach-y but drier than fruity. A blend of Pinot Gris, Ortega and a third grape that I didn't note, but the flavor and texture could be pure Ortega.

2022 Stagård Riesling Steiner Schreck Kremstal
Creme brulee and white pepper on cashmere texture. Great flavor and mouthfeel.

2022 Constant Crush Wine Limited Addition White Lights Vitae Springs Vineyard Willamette Valley White Blend
Still interesting but seems richer and darker than the bottle tasted at the winery. Reminds me of heavy basque ciders.

2017 Domaine Jean Royer Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige Red Rhone Blend

The watermelon candy fruit of a year ago is gone. In it's place, brambly dark berry fruit with forest floor and decent tannins. Not decanted in advance but would benefit from same. Okay to drink now but it has more growing to do.

2017 Martin Muthenthaler Grüner Veltliner Vergelt's Gott Wachau
Warm gold color. On the palate grapefruit and parmesan cheese notes blend harmoniously with good acidity, a custardy mouthfeel and long finish. Nice example of aged gruner. No hurry, but I'll schedule my remaining bottle for drinking by 2027.

2019 Alois Lageder Pinot Noir Krafuss Alto Adige - Südtirol
Pale taupe-y red, racy acidity, volumes of spice. A stunner, drinking perfectly right now.

2024 Cantina Terlan Pinot Grigio Tradition Alto Adige - Südtirol

Strong and assertive.

2014 Leeuwin Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Art Series Margaret River
Quite tasty for the most part but there were brief flashes of oxidation. Drink soon.

2023 Villa Stellaria Zinfandel Dry Creek Valley
Sophisticated, claret style. Killer buy for $12.99 at Grocery Outlet.

2023 Gran Moraine Grenache Flavorscape Yamhill-Carlton
Surprising pale red, lighter than the pinots. Liked it as a wine but it wasn't compelling as grenache.

2022 Gran Moraine Pinot Noir Telluric Yamhill-Carlton
Medium dark fruit, elegant and earthy. Spent 9 months in 34% NFO. If the name rings a bell, this vineyard was just gained back from Beaux Freres who'd leased it for years. I preferred it to the Dropstone, which was even more expensive. $80/bottle.

2016 Zena Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir Block 6 Eola - Amity Hills
Didn't take notes at the winery a few weeks ago beyond writing "OFS", but it says a lot that I was willing to pay $110 for some to bring home rather than risk never having this wine again.

2024 Gran Moraine Rosé of Pinot Noir Yamhill-Carlton
My favorite rose of all those tasted while in Oregon a few weeks ago. Dusty on the nose and palate with perfectly balanced fruit. 100% Pinot. Great tasting room experience too.

That is a whole lot of wines!

I'll just add that the Evolve Spontaneity (a bit of an oddball) is (usually, but it varies) a blend of Ortega, Ehrenfelser, Chardonnay, and Riesling. I've seen it but never tasted it - rightly or wrongly wrote it off as one of the many 'potpouri' mixtures that seldom result in much. Their forte appears to be bubbly.

My Dork group in Bellingham had a 'Teutonic' night, so there's that. And the Gran Moraine wines were me catching up with notes from my recent trip to Portland--not me opening wine at home unless I have a visitor. The BC wine was brought by one guy's Canadian girlfriend. It wasn't bad at all--in fact would be a great summer porch pounder of the 'effortlessly enjoyable' variety. It's a testament to the wine's decent-ness that it could follow that Deiss without total embarrassment.

Btw, that Krafuss pinot was one that our John S. brought to lunch at your place about a year ago and procured a few bottles for some of us afterward. It was terrific then, and maybe even better now. At peak most likely.

Interesting thought process! Falkenstein wines tend to be quite light and delicate compared to their Saar peers, let alone to wines from elsewhere in Germany. But I suspect this is an issue of all modern wines being bigger than what we used to think of as Kabinett.

Quite an interesting set of wines. Nice to see a note on the Kesselstat Sekt!

Ortega! Makes sense but not a grape I drink much of.

I agree with Bill about those blends. But Ortega all on its own, at least as made by Blue Grouse winery on Vancouver Island (where Ortega is the most grown white grape), can actually be great. Best straight white hybrid I've ever had, anyway.
