With charcuterie, the 2023 Jean Vaudoisey Bourgogne rouge. Thinner Pinot fruit, cherry and raspberry, light to point of thin, won’t be buying more. B-/C+
Thursday we had beef osso buco with gremolata, broccoli rabe, leftover kale rice, and salad
2007 Felsina Fontalloro
Sweet black cherry and plum, a little saddle leather, hint of dried rose, good finish except for a touch of heat. 14% and barely holding it. B
Friday a variation on the Shalom Japan rice bowls, subbing sous vide salmon for the lox (toppings included Japanese pickles, nori, cucumber, ikura).
2018 Donnfoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Kabinett
I’m always cautious about 2018 Europeans but this is doing nicely. The warmth shows in some tropical notes to the fruit, but there are solid if not tangy acids and some more typical lime and white cherry flavors. Nice slatey finish. B+
My 2023 Goodfellows arrived, so decided to check in on 2022s
Oysters, whole sea bass, hakurei turnips, turnip greens, salad
2022 Goodfellow Tsai Vineyard Chardonnay
I decanted but less reduction than most Goodfellow whites, Granny smith, lemon zest, white peach. Good acids, minerally finish. B+
Sicilian lemon chicken, honeynut squash, Brussels sprouts, salad
2022 Goodfellow Temperance Hill Berserker Cuvee Chardonnay
Lots of reduction here, I call matchstick, Betsy says reminds her of fenugreek. Decanting brings it around, apple and peach with herbs/spices (maybe including fenugreek), saline note to finish. With air B+/B
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
