Fowl play, but nothing to quail about (with a mini-rant)

by Mark Lipton » Sat Nov 08, 2025 11:10 pm

Today was our day to perform a good deed. As we watch our society rapidly collapse into chaos, we decided to help out a "neighbor" in need. My wife had learned of a woman, recently divorced, who had just moved into an apartment after living on friends' couches (to be able to retain custody of her son). She needed everything, so since we are in the process of downsizing we decided it would be a win-win to give her a carload of furniture and other household necessities (linens, plates, silverware). So, this afternoon we loaded up the car with the goodies and set off for her apartment, arriving at the appointed hour only to learn that she was delayed and in transit. After two more delays involving various crises including a flat tire, we gave up and headed home to prepare a comforting dinner of smoked European quail, roasted sweet potato and sauteed shi'itakes with shallots. To accompany it, I opened a bottle of 2008 Pavelot Savigny-les-Beaune 1er La Dominode. It was a lovely match to the food (though my French friends would probably say that pigeonneau would have been a better match): tart raspberry, earth, floral notes and a streak of minerality, along with the acids one expects from that vintage.

We're supposed to try again tomorrow morning. Hopefully, it'll work out then..

The Pavelot sounds promising - I have the 2018 Aux Guettes and am becoming impatient!

2018 Burgs generally need time to slim down.

Did it work out the next morning? I went thru everything over the weekend and took a carload of food and toiletry items to the Food Bank to help those in need. Not sure how many around here are on SNAP, but I'll bet its more than most of us realize, and then there are those who don't even get that who just need help period.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Yes, Jean got a text from her the next morning and we dropped the stuff off at 10 am. She was waiting for us outside and we brought all the stuff into her apartment. I haven't seen a place that empty since I last moved into an apartment. Nothing but a bed, pretty much, so the tables and chairs and kitchen stuff should make a huge difference. She was very sincere and apologetic about the previous day's problems. Even in good times, I know that there's 40% food insecurity in my community and the food pantry I pass on my way into work always has a line outside. I don't think anyone with eyes and a soul can possibly think that there aren't millions in desperate need of help in this country.
