2001 Château Mouton - not the first growth but rather a wine from Jean-Philippe Janoueix who has a portfolio of quite a few inexpensive Bordeaux. Not sure how he avoided a fast court action on the part of Mouton Rothschild but perhaps French law doesn't afford the sort of passing off protection one might expect. They explain in their notes that 'mouton' comes from 'motte' meaning above (as in above the law?).

The wine drinks very decently given the price - around $25 at the time I picked one up (vs. the Grand Vin that now sells here for $1500 a bottle). It drinks like a Bordeaux superieur normally does and in retrospect I should have cellared a case at the price.

Has anyone else come across this one?

Aw, Bill... I was expecting fireworks from the Grand Vin when I saw the title. Regardless, it does sound like a nice weekday claret.

Never seen it.

Looks like the wine ceased to exist shortly after.

In what language does mutte mean above? I don't think a French word. In French Mouton is mutton (or sheepskin). Looks like they changed the name to Ch. Croix Mouton.
The only Janoueix wine I'm familiar with is La Confession, which is almost always hot and overripe. He probably does better in lesser appellations like Bdx Sup.
