Do you tip your FedEx (or UPS) drivers?

by Jenise » Wed Oct 22, 2025 2:11 pm

I finally have a new steady driver, it seems. Recently she brought a wine shipment of 2 cases, I asked if I could have her take it to the garage (I've got a new back problem, can't lift.) So the next time she came she didn't bring it in, just rang the doorbell and delivered it straight to the garage after I opened the door. Yesterday, ditto, and this time she said, "My name's Kylie, btw, looks like we're going to get to know each other." I haven't had anyone this attentive or regular on my route in years, and I not only love it but right now I need it and would like to show appreciation.

Rather than get into individual tips each time, maybe Christmas? What do any of the rest of you do?

So at one point I had the same UPS driver for what seemed like eons. He liked wine, so I occasionally opened a just delivered case and gave him a bottle. He still delivers to me on rare occasions, but it's no longer his regular route.

Nobody else is remotely consistent.

With the caveat that tipping culture is inhumane and a living wage recognizing the dignity of all work is the only sensible way, yes, I always do an annual tip. FWIW USPS drivers technically can't accept cash, so a gift card it is for them. UPS drivers are unionized and make an good wage, FedEx Home (the vast majority) and Amazon are independent contractors and I assume they're quite exploited.

My next door neighbor’s son is a delivery contractor for Amazon. He hates the long hours, but he gets $26/hr and overtime. So it’s not terrible.

So she came today as expected. When I met her in the garage and she added to my pile of wine boxes, I said "this isn't all for me, btw, I'm buying for the neighborhood Christmas dinner--90 people, five courses." She seemed interested so I asked if she enjoys wine. Mostly white, she's trying to learn to like red, her boyfriend likes cabernet but she thinks it's bitter. I do not have the kind of soft, fleshier, sweeter wines that would be the right kind of training wheels for someone like her, but because her boyfriend likes cabernet I gave her a bottle of a very good Rasa 2018 Washington cab blend that's getting into a softer stage right now. They might both enjoy it -- or hate it -- but at least I tried.

We tip the UPS man at Christmas. He has learned all the myriad doorways and stairwells.

I used to regularly tip the UPS and FedEx guys at Christmas/New Year. But in last few years we don't have a steady guy.
I tip mail, garbage, paper guys.
I don't tip during rest of year, but have simple deliveries with no special requests (for wine I have come to office, street level storefront, and half the time I come out to truck.)

Our UPS, FedEx and Amazon drivers are all a rotating cast of characters, perhaps surprising in a town as small as ours (pop. ~100K). We do leave an annual gift for our USPS carrier, though (they change fairly often, too, however)
