WTN: Rudi and Rhys

Saturday was a lovely fall day, we were quite busy-, we attended local No Kings rally and then hosted a few dogs for Ruby the Hound’s 9th birthday party. Then a quick dinner - I had picked up some lovely toro as well as scallops at the market, seared both and served with Chinese broccoli and rice
2007 Rudi Pichler Smaragd Kirchweg Riesling
Maybe not the best match, comes across as a bit heavy and ponderous, this could use a bit more acid and a bit less alcohol (says n13%, tastes higher). B-/C+

Sunday I had a meeting all day and Betsy was helping with her mother, for dinner we used a gift certificate to a good seafood restaurant for some takeout:
Crabcakes
a seafood bowl with mussels, shrimp, and oysters
Grilled bass
Rice and beans
Roast vegetables
Wine was the 2022 Rhys Chardonnay (Santa Cruz Mountains). Pear, guava, lemon zest and just a touch of vanilla. Good body, fresh acids, and good finish with wet rocks and rain. Very nice for non-single vineyard level. B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Do you think the Pichler was past its best or just never that great?

I think I liked it a bit more before, but I also think it might have been better served with heavier fare.
