Yesterday I became an official senior citizen. 3 couples joined us on the patio (lovely early fall night) for dinner.
Started with pate de campagne, radishes with butter, smoked scallops, and potato chips
2002 Vilmart “Grand Cellier d’Or” Brut
Pear, citrus zest and macadamia, drinking well and with good length. B+/A-
Then Tomatoes 2 Ways- caprese and fried green tomatoes with parmesan
1989 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne GC
While I’m not a Louis Latour fan overall the Corton Charlie is an exception and this has held up very well for what I think was a warm year. Pear, candied lemon, and a hint of hazelnut, round but not flabby. The oak is well integrated. Good focus, long. B+
2010 Fevre Valmur Chablis GC
Apples, limes and herbs, chalky mineral notes, long bright and zesty. A-
Beef stew with potatoes, carrots, and dried fruits
1983 Ch. Haut Marbuzet
Fully mature with lots of tertiary notes but there’s still a core of black cherry and cassis fruit. Some leather and cigarbox, still a bit of St Estephe sternness. B/B+
2000 Ch. Corbin
Plummy dark fruit, a bit oftannin still, some menthol notes, attractive profile but a bit shorter than I would have hoped. B
We finished with a nice cheese selection, berries, and ice cream. Loved the wines, loved my friends more.
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
