finger lakes wineries

by Howard » Sat Mar 17, 2007 12:10 pm

I'm going to pick up my daughter from Middlebury in late May this spring and thought I'd tour a little of the Finger Lakes wine region while I was in that part of the country. I don't know much about those wines. Can some one point me to a resource(s) for 1) learning about the best/typical wines in the region and 2) figuring out which wineries are worth visiting/tasting?

Thanks in advance.

Howard,
I'd say that many members of this community are Finger Lake savy and this is the best place to have those questions answered. Also try http://www.newyorkwines.org/

...and by May we might be out of this horrible weather pattern; just had to pull my car out of a ditch, which I drove into thanks to poor visibility and the damned town snow plow covering over my driveway--again.

Anyway, Ed gave you good head start.

Howard,
See Ed Draves post (below) about Finger Lakes Winemaker interviews. Also, see this link: Uncork NY - Finger Lakes. Riesling, Chardonnay, PN and Cab Franc seem to do pretty well there. You may also want to consider a trip through the Niagara Peninsula of Ontario, as it is the shortest route between Buffalo and Detroit. Similar varieties to Finger Lakes plus Gamay and, of course, Ice Wines. Many of the Finger Lakes wineries offer decent low end wines made from hybrids and labrusca as well. Some of these can be surprising. Ontario has very limited hybrids (except Vidal, which is used in many Ice Wines) and almost no labrusca.
Chico - Hey! This Bottle is empty!
Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

You might like to see the report on this site of my visits to Finger Lakes -- it is at http://www.wineloverspage.com/reports/ny2003.phtml

Thanks foks very much. I haven't got the time right now to read everything that's been suggested, but I knew if I asked, you'd point me in the right direction. I'm looking forward to reading about, and drinking some new wines to me before my visit.

Thanks again -
Howard
