WTN: 2 Pinots and a Nebbiolo walk into a bar

by Dale Williams » Fri Sep 12, 2025 3:33 pm

Tuesday pork chops with apples and miso, leftover spinach, and all blue potatoes
2022 Vincent “Zenith” Pinot Noir
Crunchy raspberry and cranberry, nice stemmy spice notes, a little mustard seed. This is way more in the bright and zingy category than fruity, which is fine with me and complements the food. B+/A-

Wednesday I grilled H-mart marinated chicken, teeny eggplant, and king trumpet mushrooms, plus had bok choy with oyster sauce and rice with furikake
2011 Maison Ilan “Les Chaffots” Morey St. Denis 1er
Light and maybe a little dilute, but no green flavors, some red and black cherry fruit, a little coffee note, just a hint of barnyard. Doesn’t seem to have much left in the tank, but a nice enough Burg (maybe not nice enough for a 1er). I can’t find any ABV, are you shocked Ray Walker didn’t follow rules? B-

Thursday Betsy made jalapeno smash burgers and a salad.
2001 Stefano Farina Barolo
Very floral, red cherry fruit but really more rose petals and violets, some light tar notes. Still a bit of tannic grip, not the longest finish but hey this was $16 when I purchased. Holds up well through evening, gets a bit ferric towards end. B+/B

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Ha! Although it seems like that does happen from time to time where ABV not noted for European wines in the US, presumably something about different export labels getting mixed up in the shuffle.

But that RW dude is really a character. Just did a google refresher and seems like post-Ilan he was involved in a shady BMW parts business and then a shady bourbon business, ripping off people from industry to industry. I suppose it's just a classic con man.

I think the BMW parts thing was actually pre-Ilan.
I think there was some question about the bourbon , some source claims that folks felt dubious,
