WTN: Four Older Calif Cabs....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Jul 13, 2025 5:47 pm

We tried these four at out Pig+Fig tasting last week:
1. Eberle CabSauv PasoRobles (13.3%) EberleWnry/PasoRobles 1985: Dark color w/ slight browning; strong toasty/Fr.oak slight blackcurranty/Cab complex oldCab nose; fairly soft some cedary/pencilly/oldRed bit dried out/tired slightly oldCab flavor w/ soft/light tannins; a bit on the tired side but definitely an old Cab that's hanging on for dear life; interesting but not much pleasure offered up.

2. Kunde CabSauvg SonomaVlly (13%; EB) 1990: Dark color w/ some browning; some earthy bit blackcurranty/Cab light toasty/oak/vanilla some complex oldCab/pencilly/cedary nose; soft light blackcurranty/Cab fairly smooth bit cedary/pencilly/oldRed flavor w/ light tannins; a rather old Cab that speaks of Cab and still has a bit of life in it; clearly on the downside. $14.29

3. LaurelGlenVnyds TerraRosa CabSauv NapaVlly (12.5%) LaurelGlenVnyds/St.Helena 1990: Dark color w/ some bricking; strong lovely blackcurranty/Cab bit herbal some toasty/smokey/oak fairly complex very attractive nose; lightly tart strong blackcurranty/Cab/mature bit old-timey CA Cab fairly complex fully mature smooth flavor w/ light gentle tannins; no signs of drying out or tired; a lovely fully-mature CA Cab. $9.89
________________
4. Ravenswood PickberryVnyds/SonomaMtn (13.8%; 54% CS/26% Merlot/20% CabFranc) Ravenswood/Sonoma 1990: Very dark color w/ slight bricking; strong toasty/oak/smokey strong blackcurranty/Cab/ripe bit licorice classic Sonoma Cab quite lovely fairly youthful nose; lightly tart strong blackcurranty/Cab/licorice youthful strong vanilla/toasty/Fr.oak slight tannic/dried out flavor w/ modest gentle tannins; still a bit youthful & speaks of Ravenswood winemaking; unlikely to get any better.

More cabrsplat from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. An interesting lot of older CA Cabs. The Eberle was clearly on its last legs but the other three spoke strongly of mature CA Cab. The LaurelGlen & the Ravenswood were easily the best. I slightly preferred the Ravenswood because it showed more complexity, but the Laurel Glen was in interesting fully-mature old-timey CA Cab.

Gives me some level of confidence about the 1989 and 1990 Beringer PR Cabs from my dad’s cellar.

Wow, what a fun blast from the past. I was a big fan of both Laurel Glen and the R Pickberry, and owned many. A slat from the OWC the Pickberries came in is part of my cellar wall to this day. Not surprised that both held up.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Great notes, Tom. It's been a long time since I've thought about Kunde wines. 1990 was a fantastic year, but what I most note is the alcohol levels on those wines: none even reach 14%. Truly days gone by.
