WTN: Last bottle from my stock of Fèlsina

by Tim York » Mon Jun 30, 2025 12:06 pm

I once had a good stock Fèlsina covering its basic Chianti Classico, its superior CC Rancia and its super-Tuscan Fontalloro as well as its Colli Senesi Farnetella, all purchased in Liège, Belgium. The overall standard has been very high. With this last Fontalloro, they are now all gone. :(

1999 Fattoria di Fèlsina Berardenga Fontalloro - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (29/06/2025)
This is still an elegant and classy Tuscan Sangiovese but is showing a bit of age compared with a nearly perfect bottle about 2 and a half years ago. It still showed a nose which was a subtle blend mature red fruit, discreet flowers, fine minerals and a hints of meat and balsam. This followed through onto the medium++ linear shaped palate which showed good depth and length, fresh moreish acidity, silky texture. However there was a very slight oxidative note creeping into the aromas both on the nose and palate, which was particularly noticeable on the finish and the colour was more amber than I recall from before. My last bottle, alas, and very good but I would be drinking up if I had more.

The first four lines of your description were so positive, I was surprised when the oxidation crept in on the fifth. Too bad--I'm sure you were expecting better from a Fontalloro.

Time to dig out that last bottle of 1999 Felsina CC that’s buried in the cellar.
