The ultimate fashion statement for the wine geek

by Sue Courtney » Thu Mar 15, 2007 4:20 pm

Here's the ultimate fashion statement for the wine geek - clothing made from wine. Yes it's true.

"Australian researchers have combined art and science to make dresses from fermented fabric, using bacteria to 'grow' slimy dresses from wine and beer.

"We're looking at [the dresses] to provoke some discussion about future fashions, about the possibility of other material we can use instead of our normal cottons and silks," says Gary Cass, who works on the Micro'be' project at the University of Western Australia.

Cass is a laboratory technician at the university who, among other things, writes science fiction.

He says he was inspired to grow the dresses when he was working in a vineyard many years ago."

Don't know about cotton, but I hear silk worms have formed a union and their leader is quite a slime ball...

Speaking about wine-related fashion, does anyone know where I can order wine related items like lapel pins, tie bars and tie tacks? I don't what to give anyone the impression that I'm a Master of Wine, which I will never be, but I would like to let people know, subtly, that wine is a passion of mine.

And I'll get mine after you get yours. I'm a little troubled about the part where you have to keep it wet, though.

My fashion statement and advertising comes in the form of red-stained shirts...one look and everyone knows what I drink.

Jon, I've never done business with these folks, but they have a corkscrew tie tack that looks pretty cool:

And these people have a sterling silver wine bottle tie tack that's not actually shown on the page.....

Interestingly enough, one of my younger sisters who is a goldsmith worked for this company in Ithaca when she first graduated from college.
