WTN: There were lines on the mirror, lines on her face

by David M. Bueker » Sun Jun 22, 2025 7:50 pm

  • 2021 Desire Lines Evangelho - USA, California, San Francisco Bay, Contra Costa County (6/22/2025)
    I’m finally beginning to understand this wine. When it first came out it was bright, red cherry, and basically one note. A year later there was little change. Finally, two and a half years after it was released, the door has opened, and Evangelho has walked through. It’s a brighter version of Evangelho, as the Carignan takes center stage, with Mourvèdre playing bass in the backup band. What it still has is the savory, lip-smacking persistence of those ancient vines on sand. This wine needs to be paired with a meaty, fatty dish so that the acidity can cut through it, and the savory notes can dance with the herbs and spices in the food. Find me a plate of braised short ribs ASAP!

Well, you've baffled me again. Struck out with Eagles, Life, Fast Lane and Walsh. It is a wine from California, but I suspect that there's more to the title than that.

Nope. You had it. Just referring to Lines in the winery name.

I have largely exhausted Evangelho references between D&R, Bedrock, Ridge, and Desire Lines.

There should be some territory left to mine if you exploit the Evangelho = gospel territory… (Peace in the Valley?) but if you don’t like that idea I’m too tired to fight about it. :wink:

Sounds delicious, by the way. I don’t have any Desire Lines Evangelho and will have to fix that.
cheers, Patchen

If you like Carignan (90% of the blend) it’s well worth it.

Had another bottle tonight, and went to write a note in CellarTracker. Saw my note from June , and figured no reason to say the same things again. This is really good now and has legs.

I muttered something underneath my breath
She studied the lines on my face;
I must must admit I felt a little uneasy
When she bent down to tie the laces on my shoe...
Tangled up in blue...

That song gave rise to one of my all-time best/worst Mondegreens: for the first 10-20 listens on the radio I thought he was singing "tender lovin' blues"
