Riesling Month in the Finger Lakes

May has been proclaimed Riesling Month in the Finger Lakes. Kickoff will be a multi-course dinner at Red Newt on May 5 prepared by three chefs http://www.rednewt.com. Highlighting the dinner will be the introduction of Tierce, an '04 Dry Riesling that is a collaborative product of Anthony Road, Fox Run, and Red Newt. The wine is a screwcap priced at $30, about twice my limit but within the increasingly upper reaches of Finger Lakes wines these days.

There have been a few Finger Lake Rieslings in the $25 range so the price does not shock me. Knowing the talent behind Tierce, I suspect the price is well worth it. Hopefully a few TNs will pop up here soon. I'll try to buy a bottle for myself and would like to drink it at its peak.

Right, let's give the wine-makers their due:

Peter Bell at Fox Run
Johannes Reinhardt at Anthony Road
Dave Whiting at Red Newt

The word is 100 cases of Tierce, and available only at the three wineries.

For a $30 Riesling I need to taste first. Haven't, but hope to soon.

If you do that, I promise to bring the riesling that was "best White" at the San Francisco Int'l in 2004 (or was that 2003?), and Best Riesling two weeks later at the East Coast Int'l.

I'm hoping to make a trip down the west side of Seneca Lake in a couple of weeks to visit Wiemer Vineyards, and will go past both Fox Run and Anthony Road on the way. I'll also try to pick up a bottle of the Tierce Riesling for NiagaraCOOL.

Speaking of NiagaraCOOL, will there be a post on the offline board covering wine themes? I have pretty good access to Finger Lakes wines, but can pull other things I've got on hand (after reading a recent Paul B. post, I may bring a Hétszolo Dry Furmint I haven't gotten around to opening yet).

There is a post in the Offline section regarding NiagaraCOOL. I mentioned that we would have a Riesling "Taste-Off", but aside from that, I don't think we have any other specific theme. By browsing various posts, I'm expecting about 4-6 Rieslings from MI, several; from Niagara Peninsula, including a vertical from Hildebrand from the late '80s and early '90s, Several from the FLs and I would expect a few from Chautaqua and Niagara counties in NY. As far as other wines, anything unusual is always welcome, especially for the likes of PaulB and his ilk. :wink: If you have a suggestion for a separate theme, we're pretty much open.

TN: ’04 Keuka Spring Riesling

Here is one to keep in mind for the diversity of Finger Lakes Riesling. The aroma is vegetative and a bit of diesel. Tastes of subtle cheese and lemons. Not at minerally to this palate. Semi-dry. About $12
