WTN: Piedmonts (red, white, and pink)

by Dale Williams » Mon Jun 16, 2025 10:27 am

Local group met on Fred’s deck Friday, theme was Piedmont.

2022 Giacometto Bruno Canovese Rosato
Light, a bit flat and empty, strawberry bubble gum B-/C+

Fred had a couple of beautiful plated appetizers
Sardines with agrodolce
Roasted cherry tomatoes with mozzarella and basil

Blind white #1
Slightly grassy, a bit musky sweet, I got Arneis on first guess but it was a stab in the dark.
2023 Guidobono Roero Arneis C+

Blind white #2
Crisper, pears with spice and green olives, interesting.
2023 Malvira Roero Arneis B

Blind red #1
Red fruit (cherry and raspberry), a lactic note that leads me to guess Barbera
Blind white #1 was first I ever heard of producer, here we go again.
2023 Guidobono Barbera d'Alba B-

Blind red #2
There’s black and red raspberry fruit, light bodied with a hint of effervescence, I’m lost and guess Freisa.
2023. Vajra Langhe Nebbiolo Claré J.C. B-/B

Then Fred served a wonderful veal stew
Blind red #3
No guesses as mine. Ripe approaching hot, big dark fruit with a pruney edge, not what I hoped for
2007 Vajra Albe Barolo C+/B-

Blind red #4
Red fruits, violets, balsamic notes, good though finish is a little short., I guessed aged Barolo. Close.
1998 Pertinace (Cantina Vignaioli) Barbaresco Vigneto Nervo B+/B

Blind red #5
Black cherry, warm, baking spices, hint of tar. Guessed young Langhe Nebbiolo. Well, half right!
2015 Vallana Campi Radici B

Blind red #6
Young, red and black cherry, a tarry note makes me guess Nebbiolo again. Duh!
2022 Oddero Barbera d'Alba Superiore B

Fun night, even if no wow wine s (plenty of wow food, and great company)

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I mean who would serve Barbera after the Nebbiolo? Right? ;)

I'm a fan of the Oddero Barbaresco Rombone - good solid wine.

The order was determined by host asking who has a lighter red (as blind) and serving first, but not a crowd that necessarily knows much about the wine they brought.
I have had a lot of Oddero from 60s and 70s, not much recent.
