1996 Leasingham Shiraz Classic Clare - at over a quarter century old, the wine still has deep colour, lightening only a bit at the edges. Not a good one for blind tasting as the American oak immediately gives it away (I think that they sometimes also use some French, but it is the American that is 'louder' in this one). Close to an overdose of sweet fruit, and vanilla features. By no means a subtle wine,it is indeed tasty though I prefer wines with more complexity and balance. In summer, with a steak on the barbie, it would fit in quite well.

Your description of it had me thinking barbecued ribs. A slightly sweet rub or even sauce would help downplay the sweetness in the wine.

Yes, I think that could work well.

You and I should share Aussies sometime. I have a few 90's vintages myself.

I have some 90s reds that I should open - was thinking of doing an Aussie dinner - have at least 4 vintages of Penfolds 707, some nice Henschkes etc. I think it might lend itself to a BBQ sort of theme. Have a dozen or so cases of reds that could use drinking - got any kangaroo recipes?

I probably have a dozen or so. Rosemount Balmorals, Dead Arms, St. Hallett Old Block, Eileen Hardy, Lehmann Mentors, and the like. Would be fun to open on a warm day--if there's ever another one. :)

Let's consider doing a Down Under theme for the July lunch!
