What Bordeaux Vintage Do You Wish You Had Bought More Of?

by Bill Spohn » Wed Mar 26, 2025 1:46 pm

For me it would be 1975 - a hard vintage that too quite awhile to come around, but many are still in very fine shape - sadly, I am down to a half dozen bottles, but I have enjoyed quite a few cases over the years.

There would be some argument in favour of 1970, but many would not have been into wine back then to be able to buy the vintage.

For younger vintages, 1982 is an obvious choice (some 1983s are starting downhill, but most 82s are still in good shape),

The sad fact is that we tend to buy too much in vintages that don't age as well as the critics predict and not enough of vintages that are predicted to go 'long haul'.

More of? I wish I had bought 1989 at all. Just wasn’t into red wine at the time it came out.

Assuming we're talking buying on release (or en primeur) '89s and '90s were on shelves when I first got into wine. But I wasn't buying in any quantity then, I have some of both, but backfilled. Of the vintages I have that I bought on release and wish I had more of:
1996 Medoc and Graves
1998 RB and Graves (this would be #1 on my list, down to roughly mixed case)
2001 esp RB
2005 & 2008 , but as I am 64 those are being optimistic.

1982, specifically the first growths. I had ordered Mouton, Lafite and Latour futures at $40USD a bottle, but was told that it was sold out, and the price had gone up to $48. I decided that was too much! I did manage to get 18 bottles of the '82 Léoville Las Cases for around $16USD though. :D
