We started with a 2021 Riesling comparison, which was not the fairest because 2021 Wehrheim Kastanienbusch GG was clearly on another level of elegance and refinement, while also giving easy pleasure through its zesty juicy body. So good.

The 2021 Philipp Kuhn Grosskarlbacher Burgweg Erste Lage was a different wine. Broader and denser, less refinement and less energy. Still delicious, and some mineral cut helped, but the comparison did it no favors. I have no idea where it might go in the future.

That wasn't enough so my friend opened an anecdotal wine that barely exists: 2020 Andreas Durst Pinot Noir S. Delicious whack of ripe 2020 fruit, somewhat in the “cool” natural wine style, but the flavor profile is not the typical carbonic glou-glou stuff. Some of the rustic earthy Spätburgunder notes but also very elegant and handles the ripe 2020 frame very well. Not a wine to win prizes or defeat the competition, but we were happy to drink a few glasses.

Interesting set of wines.

Kuhn is one of those producers that has been around but I have never bought a single bottle. Not sure why - even just to try.

nice notes. 2 new producers to me. I had some '11/'12 dry Kuhns and quite enjoyed, but haven't seen since.

Yes, the Kuhn was something brought by my friend, I've never purchased either. Probably not a 'top level' producer, but still tasty. The bench goes deep in Germany.

But note this is not Peter-Jakob Kühn the famous Rheingau estate, this is Philipp Kuhn in the Pfalz.
