WTN: Green pioneer - 2012 Tablas Creek Mourvèdre

by David M. Bueker » Sun Mar 02, 2025 11:50 am

  • 2012 Tablas Creek Mourvèdre - USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles (3/1/2025)
Surprisingly youthful, there was still vivid red cherry fruit, though the underlying Mourvedre-ness was there with earthy, loamy, leathery tones as well. Light on its feet, the structure had largely melted away, so despite the youthful fruit it was probably a good time to drink this. Very enjoyable, and makes me want to pursue other vintages of this bottling from Tablas.

As mentioned in this month's Wine Focus intro, Tablas is at the forefront of the greening of California wine. While this bottling precedes their recent organic, regenerative certification, Tablas has always been focused on soil health.

This was from Thor Iverson's cellar. He introduced me to Tablas Creek many years ago. I am very glad he did.

Interesting variety or reactions to TC on this board today. I have had some very good wines from them, but it's usually the whites that work for me. I really haven't had that many of the reds and wasn't especially enamored with anything on my one visit to the winery, a possibly unfair lasting impression.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

For my tastes, TC is one of the most interesting producers in Paso. I don't think I've ever had a monovarietal Mourvedre from them, though it's certainly in a lot of their red wines. Sounds delicious.
