- 1991 Ravenswood Zinfandel Draper - USA, California, Napa Valley (2/28/2025)
This was a really fantastic wine. That should not have been surprising, as early 1990s Ravenswood Zinfandels were (and many still are) about as good as Zinfandel has ever been. There was an intensity to the fruit that I was not expecting - a sense of maybe even some over ripeness, but never a candied or cloying sensation. The fruit was kept fresh and focused by the bright acidity of the wine. There wasn't much in the way of tannin left, but it didn't need it as the acids held everything together. I would never think a 16.2% alcohol red wine could offer refreshment, but this one did. Again, thanks to the acidity, this was eminently drinkable and a welcoming food partner. I only wish I had five or six bottles, instead of just one. The Ravenswood library releases have been outstanding across the board, but this bottle put its head above even that high level.
