WTN: Wines we love - Beaujolais!

by David M. Bueker » Thu Feb 27, 2025 8:01 pm

  • 2009 Marcel Lapierre Morgon - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon (2/27/2025)
Hey why not age a bottle of Lapierre for 16 years! It’s still in excellent condition, I am just not sure I could identify it as Beaujolais in a blind tasting. It has become an interesting, savory synthesis of Pinot Noir and Cabernet Franc. There’s still red fruit, and it’s accented by slightly green notes, which seems odd from a vintage as ripe as 2009. Then the savory stuff comes in. I could swear I was smelling cumin. I even opened the spice cabinet and grabbed the actual cumin - yep, same thing. There was also an earthy note, reminiscent of one of Hardy Wallace’s Mourvèdre wines. Quite a distinctive palette for a Beaujolais!

Seems to still have plenty of stuffing, so no need to hurry. Just be prepared for something a little offbeat.

I have one bottle of this left. I suppose I should save it for a curry dish?

Not enough heft for a curry.

Are you thinking the cumin would make a curry match? Not that you asked but my opinion? It will cancel it out, not bring it out. You need contrast.

It was somewhat tongue in cheek but thanks for the serious opine.
