Wine Focus March 2025 - Green New Deal

by David M. Bueker » Thu Feb 27, 2025 5:53 pm

It's March. It's almost spring in the Northern Hemisphere. Things might actually start greening up after our almost typically dreary winter.

So this month we're going to "think green" and focus on wines from wineries that are organic, biodynamic, sustainable and so forth. Let's give some support to the producers who are looking to do a better job caring for the world while they also make delicious wine. In the USA, Tablas Creek is a real leader in this area, as they are now certified as "Regenerative Organic" which includes more than just soil health, as it incorporates animal welfare (Tablas has sheep grazing their vineyards), as well as sustainability for the people who work in the vineyards and winery.

One more important thing - no mega-bottles. You know them. Even the empty ones weigh more than a typical bottle of wine that comes in semi-sensible packaging. Thankfully many producers are moving away from them, but too many still put image over sustainability. Bedrock Wine Co moved to lighter glass a couple of years ago. Other producers are doing the same. Some, such as Extradimensional Wine Co. YEAH!, as well as many European wineries never went to the big bruiser bottles.

I probably have a lot of wines from qualifying wineries, but I'll be a little lost here as I don't neccessarily know/remember that about them to single out their wines. I don't subscribe to any wineries per se.

A number of Bordeaux estates have gone organic/biodynamic. I suspect a lot of your Washington faves as well.

Oh I'm sure! But as I said, it's incidental to me liking a wine and not something I specifically seek out and pay a lot of attention to. Just posted about an Occhipinti--it was easy to suspect that of being a candidate, and a quick google confirmed it.

I get that. It used to be incidental to me as well. For various reasons it’s been more at the front of my mind these last several years. Listening to a lot of podcasts with Steve Matthiasson and Sam Coturri I guess.

Can I shoehorn Grüner Veltliner or Vinho Verde into this topic?

NV Pizzini Animante XI Tirature Franciacorte, Lombardy.

Excellent aperifif for a recent tasting downtown! Usually around $63 Cda, zero dosage. Very dry, blend of chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot blanc. Straw yellow in color, nose of flowers, citrus, apricot, dried fruits.

Did not exactly fly of the shelf but a first for me and others I guess.
