Attended a dinner at a loca restaurant last evening. Started with:
2017 Hubert Lamy Bourgogne Blanc Les Chataigners - clean dry wine with a hint of sweet fruit at the end. Not bad for a modest bourgogne.
1999 Domaine Jacques Prieur Beaune 1er Cru Les Champs Pimont - my bottle, and as usual I check out existing reviews to try and get a general idea of where a particular wine may be in terms of evolution. In this case the results were ridiculous - tasters obviously unused to Burgundies (probably specialized in CA or Oz), claiming that the wine would peak in the early 2000s. In fact this wine was just hitting stride now (it has been drinking well for me over the last 3 or 4 years. I'll quote a friend's previous note - " cherry, nutmeg, smoked meat and forest floor" and another knowledgeable friend (Jenise) - " A 1er Cru that drinks more like a Grand Cru with plenty of runway ahead, no rush." Sized it up perfectly.
