Picpoul Noir!!!!!

by Jenise » Wed Feb 26, 2025 2:20 pm

I wasn't able to attend last weekend's Dorkfest, theme "Obscure Wines", but I understand one of the bottles present was a Picpoul Noir from the Languedoc, something I've never heard of. And maybe no one here has because a search query turned up zero results.

Apparently it was quite good! And from a producer who specializes in 'different'. Thought I'd share:

Cool! That's news to me, too. Wonder if it's a sport a la Pinot Blanc?

Wine-Searcher has a little blurb on Picpoul noir, along with the standard links to some examples with their vendors. Check it out and hit me with a few affiliate clicks!

So, Robin, I bit and went to Wine Searcher. Interesting to see whose growing this one.

But something else, while there I noticed Wine Searcher's food recommendations for this grape: Prosciutto e melone (melon wrapped in Italian ham), Turkey meatloaf and Roasted broccoli with chickpeas. My eyes almost rolled out of my head.

Can we just take a moment to talk about how stupid most food recommendations are?

According to that Wine Searcher article, picpoul noir is indeed a red mutation of picpoul blanc. I was surprised to discover that it's one of the permitted varieties for Chateauneuf-du-Pape. So is picpoul gris, which along with picpoul blanc is allowed in white CdP. Beaucastel claims to use all of the permitted varieties in their CdP so they must be growing some picpoul noir.

What is Dorkfest? These sound like my peeps. (I'm currently hoarding different recent bottlings of pelaverga.)

Jeff, I have the Burlotto! Definitely one with which to stump the chumps, and my thoughts exactly when I purchased it.

The Dorks are my Bellingham tasting group, and any gathering is a Dorkfest.

Sounds like fun!

I have three of them on hand, and scouting for a fourth:
Burlotto 2022 Pelaverga
Terre del Barolo 2021 Verduno Pelaverga
Castello di Verduno 2022 Basadone Pelaverga

I have two bottles of the 2020 Verduno Basadone, mebbe from the same source as yours. I've polished off all my 2018 Burlotto.

I'm a big big fan of the Burlotto Sauv Blanc. That's what I went after, the Basadone was already gone, so I settled for the pelaverga. Will have to try one soon.

I tasted the '22 Burlotto at an as-yet-unreported-on BBWO event. It was better than most of the barolo there!
