WTN: Wines we love - Dönnhoff!

  • 2010 Dönnhoff Felsenberg Riesling Großes Gewächs - Germany, Nahe (2/24/2025)
First bottle from a mixed six-pack of the 2010 Dönnhoff Grosses Gewächs, and patience paid off. Such a gorgeous wine. Has that ripping 2010 acidity, but the mid-palate depth of the wine acts as a perfect foil. Still has some of that peachy Nahe fruit, but there is also more developed character almost reminiscent of Roussanne. The acids make this a very mouthwatering drink, and it brightens everything that it touches. While not fully mature, it is close, with touches of honey emerging at the edges. Feels like a drink now and over the next 3-5 years.

I am holding a 7 or 8 vintage vertical of the Hermannshohle GG, going back to the first in 2003. It feels like it needs to be something more than just my tasting group doing them blind.

I would propose a Rieslingstudy, but don’t want to be completely hijacked when Dentice whips out the 15 bottles of Falkenstein.

There's more than enough room in the world of Riesling for different crowds!

And there’s a small group (you and Dale are two members of it) that I would really like to share the wines with. Logistics are a PITA!

I'm lucky to have a close friend nearby who is mad for fine Riesling and who keeps a bulging cellar of the stuff. And is not shy about opening bottles.

Indeed! Although, I'm not sure how widespread your list is, but at least we're all on the east coast/neighboring states!

I have a few of these in various vintages, would love to do a vertical.
I'd be happy to host, figure if you triangulate David, Salil, and Rahsaan (and other NYCers) Westchester makes sense. Or if wanted to include John G he's probably even closer to David and Salil.
Or if someone wanted to host north or east of here I could give couple NYCers a ride.
Unless East Coast includes Philly or DC folks, in which case NYC probably makes sense.
Anyway, if you decide to do it I'm game for helping with logistics.
