WTN: Wines we love (Chevillon!)

by Jenise » Fri Feb 14, 2025 7:18 am

2008 Domaine Robert Chevillon Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Cailles Pinot Noir
Quite different from a bottle two years ago (same source) that was thin and more mature than expected. In fact, the initial color and fresh loamy dark fruits made me think I'd killed a baby. But it lightened up dramatically over the next 30 minutes, losing the loam and picking up red currant and leather though never quite achieving the heady aromatics of old(er) burgundy I'd hoped for to accompany my blue cheese souffles. Not sure where this is going, if anywhere good.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Yep - love Chevillon. Jealously guarding my dwindling stash.

I only have 2 bottles of this left. Planning on holding off from a while. Chevillon is one of my favorite Burg producers, though pricing has passed me in last few years,

I would hold off, Dale. Though the messages this bottle gave off were strange and conflicting (I don't know that I've ever seen a wine change so much so fast), that in itself is probably a clue to wait.

2008 was a bit of an oddball year in the Cote d'Or. I originally had high hopes for it (I have this thing for even-numbered years in Burgundy, though I make an exception for '93) but the track record has been decidedly spotty.

And an exception the other way for 2004, or are you a lover of ladybug leavings?

I think that I must be less sensitive than most to the "green meanies" thing, as I had mostly positive experiences with '04 wines, such as a Chevillon NSG VV that I recall quite fondly.

Indeed. I think maybe some of the Ultra Blue Chip producers made nice 08s, but the level where I purchase has been uneven.

Speaking of which, Jenise's 08 Chevillon Les Cailles is available here in Nyc for $165, which is just about the price for current vintages of the same wine. Suggests at least one retailer doesn't think much of the 08.

I've liked the straight NSG VV in last year or two. $165 might be same as current, but this (08 Cailles) was $50 when I bought. I've guessing this is a just a rough period, have a decent amount of confidence in coming around.
As to 2004, Chaignots in 2014 was one of the greenest LB wines I've encountered, even though I think of myself as not especially sensitive. On other hand an 04 NSG VV a year or two ago was quite nice (but also quite mature), with more herbal than ladybug accents.

Ah 2004!

Chevillon was one of the poster children for the GM issue in my experience. Truchot on the other hand...beautiful. Sadly all gone.

Good to hear. I have 1 or 2 bottles of Chevillon 2004 left. I had heard that the greenie-meanies changes into something more pleasant over time.
