WTN: Two New Pax Syrahs '22....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Thu Feb 06, 2025 12:39 pm

We had these two new Pax Syrahs at our Pig+Fig tasting last night:
1. Pax Syrah NellessenVnyd/SonomaCoast (12.0%; 100% w-c in large concrete vats; Aged: 10 mo. in
neutral 500 l Fr.oak puncheons; U/U) Pax MahlWnry/Sebastapol 2022:
Very dark/near black color; intense c-c/black pepper intense blueberry/blackberry/Syrah rather Rhonish/roasted/smokey strong w-x/Rhonish/peppery lovely complex nose; quite tart/tangy very strong c-c/Syrah/black pepper very Rhonish/roasted blackberry/blueberry very complex Rhonish flavor w/ ample chewey tannins; very strong c-c/black pepper finish that follows flavor; a classic example of a very Rhonish Calif Syrah; needs at least 3-6 yrs & should go out longer. $48.00

2. Pax Syrah Griffin'sLair/SonomaCoast (13.0%; U/U) 2022: Very dark/near black color; less w-c/Rhonish stronger blackberry/Syrah/blueberry/spicy bit simpler/less Rhonish strong c-c/Syrah/black pepper nose; strong tart/tangy more simple/blackberry/Syrah/blueberry less c-c less Rhonish/complex flavor w/ some hard tannins; very long/lingering less Rhonish finish that tracks flavor; less intense Rhonish character but plenty of structure & should be a great Syrah w/ 3-8 yrs of age. $75.00

More fikkersplat from TheBloodyPulpit:
1. Two really outstanding Pax Syrahs that have a long life afore them. I preferred the NHellessen because of its more complex Rhonish character but the Griffin's Lair is no slouch of a Syrah.

Nice notes.

More than anything else I am glad that Griffin's Lair is still producing. I think it has some issues with Syrah decline.
