WTN: Wines we love ('21 Bedrock OV Zin)

by Mark Lipton » Wed Feb 05, 2025 10:43 pm

When I think back to what got me into wine in the first place, it was largely (though not entirely) the Zinfandels of the drought years of '76-'78. By the time I decamped for grad school in NYC in '83, I was lugging with me two cases of wine, mostly Zins. Four years later, my relationship with my future wife was heavily influenced by cold winter nights of delivery Indian food with aged Zins. So, tonight, with the return of cold weather to these parts and a long day at work, we got delivery Indian food (lamb vindaloo, aloo gobi, and yellow lentil daal for the interested) and opened up the title wine. Still fairly primary and fruit-driven, it nonetheless hearkened back to the early days of our relationship and reminded me of how good that grape can be when not tarted up with tons of new oak and overextraction. No hurry if you have it: it's got at least 5 years of life left in it, but the tannins are fully resolved and it's drinking quite well right now.

Love that wine. It reminds me of the old Ravenswood Sonoma Zin.

Mark

Would you expand on that name -'21 Bedrock OV Zin

Is Bedrock the winery name or the vineyard name?

I've got Once & Future Wine Zinfandel Bedrock Vineyard 2021 (and 2018)
and I had and have now drunk 2015 Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel ( I suspect this was the wine you had the '21 of and that it's a blend of various vineyards. Unfortunately I can't find any info about it in Bedrock Wine Co's website)

Bedrock is the winery.

Their Old Vine Zin often includes some Zin from the Bedrock vineyard, which they own with Joel Peterson the Once & Future guy.

Peter - here are the release notes from the Bedrock Website

2018 Old Vine Zinfandel, California
2018 was a brilliant year for Zinfandel across California, and this wine reflects it. I have said it before, but it bears repeating—though this is one of the least expensive wines we make, in many ways it is the most important. First, it is the one Bedrock wine that trickles out to most markets, so if someone gets introduced to our wines, there is a good chance it is through this one. As such, it has to be reflective of the vibrant, fruit-filled yet fresh style we look for while crafting California’s great variety. Second, this is the wine that allows us to rehab old vineyards by giving us a place to put the fruit while we upgrade farming, pruning and soil health; at an average of 80 years of age, these lovely old vines appreciate the attention. The 2018 is a blend of 85% Zinfandel filled out with Mataro, Grenache, Alicante Bouschet, Carignan, Petite Sirah and scant amounts of the many other varieties that can be found in California’s older, multifarious vineyards. Many of our most venerable vineyards contribute to this wine, including Bedrock, Teldeschi, Esola, Pagani, Papera, Evangelho and Pato filled in with lots from other old vineyards throughout the state. This will provide great drinking pleasure with a decant early on, but as with most iterations of this bottling, it will develop nicely for a number of years. $19

They were in the Release Notes area. Here’s a link to the release that included the 2018 OVZ.

I took my 2015 Bedrock Wine Co. Old Vine Zinfandel together with 2016 Once & Future Wine Zinfandel Forcini Vineyard to a BYO restaurant when we took out my son and his partner.

We were father & son drinking wines made by father & son (and the Bedrock vineyard is own by the same father & son, tho' I didn't know it at that time.)

Peter, David beat me to the punch, but yes, that is exactly what I was referring to. And great story about the father & son connection!
