by TomHill » Tue Feb 04, 2025 2:35 pm

We had visiting friends over for heavy apps on Sat & tried:
1. le Chant du Loup Dom.Rostaing Tayard Ad'OP: Coteaux du Lyonnais RW (12%; 100% Chard/50 yr old vines; GrapeExpectations/Richmond) Emmanuel Rostaing-Tayard/Savigny Bel-Air le Recy 2023: Light gold color; some herbal/grassy light Chard/melony/appley light pencilly rather quiet nose; some tart/tangy light herbal/grassy light appley/Chard pretty light almost watery/vapid flavor; med.short bit herbal/appley finish that follows flavor; a pretty non-descript/vapid expression of Chard. $27.00 (SFW&S)

2. Pierpaolo Pecorari SauvBlanc IGP: Venezia Giulia (12.5%; VillaItaliaWines/SanFrancisco) Pierpaolo Pecorari/SanLorenzo Isontino 2023: Pale gold color w/ lots of tiny bubbles that dissapate quickly; fairly strong grassy/herbal/SB rather aggressive SB nose w/ little fruit; quite tart/tangy bit thin strong grassy/herbal/SB slight cat-pee earthy simple flavor; med.long herbal/grassy finish that follows flavor; a rather aggressively herbal/grassy expression of SB & quite disappointing for Friuli. $24.00 (SFW&S)

3. Muller-Catoir Scheurebe Trocken Pfalz (12.5%; A.P.Nr.5!74 0790 524; www.Mueller-Catoir.De; SkurnikWines/NY) Haardt 2023: Light gold color w/ lots of tiny bubbles that dissapate; fairly fragrant herbal/Scheu lightlu floral/R-like slight new mown hay somewhat attractive nose; lightly tart bit rich/lush fairly strong Scheu/floral bit grassy/hay-mow slight metallic/tangy bit coarse flavor; med. bit herbal/Scheu/grassy/earthy finish that tracks flavor; resembles a bit the floral character of a R but lots of herbal/grassy/coarse character of Schu; pleasant enough but just that. $30.00 (SFW&S)

4. Lagrange aux belles Chaussee Rouge VdF Anjou (13%; 40% CS/40% CabFranc/20% Grolleau ; whole-cluster fermentation; StevenGraf/Ridgewood/NY) 2022: Med.dark color; rather earthy/loamy sone natty/unclean slight grapey/Cabernet rather unattractive nose w/ scant fruit; soft quite earthy/loamy somewhat natty/unclean very earthy/rustic/coarse flavor w/ light coarse tannins; med. quite earthy/loamy/coarse Cab finish that tracks flavor; a slight natty quite coarse/earthy/loamy expression of Cabernet w/ scant fruit; pretty unattractive. $27.00 (SFW&S)

More diddlespect from TheBloodyPulpit::
1. I forgot to bring down some good wines from my stash to Susan's so I went by Susan's FW&S to fake it, picking 4 wines I was sure would be good for out guests. I failed badly....my reputation as a connoisseur of fine wines was severely tarnished. None of the wines were very good, I embarrassed myself in front of my guests. The Muller-Catoir was the best of a sorry lot.

As much as I love Muller-Catoir I have never been in love with their dry Scheurebe. Now their dry Muskateller is another thing entirely!
