Chump Change

by Bill Spohn » Sat Feb 01, 2025 6:22 pm

I was reading the newspaper today and noted an article that said that after Trump had confirmed the sanctions/tariffs on Canadian goods, our liquor stores were directed to exhaust their supplies of American wine as it was felt that the increased pricing as a result of the added tariffs would mean that they would no longer sell well. Given our higher pricing for wines here to start with, I have no doubt that they will be right.

Thank you Mr. Chump....er, Trump!

Yep - going to be a bit of a bumpy road for a while. A fool in charge makes life rougher for everyone.

Someone just reported on going over the border this weekend, they experienced hostility and and unusual amount of scrutiny both ways (and yes they have Nexus passes). They asked the Americans if they were likely to be asked to pay tarriffs on bringing things back from Canada, and were told yes it's likely they just hadn't figured out how to go about that.

Canada announced 25% tariffs on resources imported from us to the US. Numbers for the last tabulated year (2023) showed the US buying $429.6 billion. Get ready for paying $536 billion or finding alternate sources. Crazy!

PS - closer to home, the BC wine industry has been surviving by using US grapes after the hard frosts killed many vines here. If they add 25% to those costs I expect it will bankrupt a significant number of BC wineries who were just hanging on

And see https://www.vicnews.com/news/ontario-joins-bc-in-removing-us-booze-from-provincial-liquor-retailers-7796339

Ontario, a billion dollar annual market for US wine products has just followed BC and remove them from the shelves.

A friend of mine in Ontario has already pledged to quit drinking her favorite wine: Meiomi pinot. If all Canadians follow suit, I support it! :)

Hey - I made the pledge never to drink that wine the first time I tasted it!
