WTN: Dry Riesling-uary - Gobelsburg Heiligenstein

by David M. Bueker » Tue Jan 14, 2025 11:27 am

  • 2017 Schloss Gobelsburg Riesling 1ÖTW Ried Heiligenstein - Austria, Niederösterreich, Kamptal (1/13/2025)
Why don't I drink more Austrian wine? Every time I open a bottle of Austrian Riesling or Grüner Veltliner I find they almost always over deliver.

The 2017 Gobelsburg Heiligenstein is another in that list of over delivering wines. Crisp fruit, endless stony depth, and mouthwatering acidity are expected and present, and there is an overarching richness of texture, not like the "oily" element of some white Rhône grapes, but something more elegant. I get that extra something in a lot of Gobelsburg wines, and it draws me back time after time.

This is still a very young wine, and I will need to bury my last bottle or it will be drunk up too soon.

p.s. there's a very nice piece about the Heiligenstein vineyard in the online magazine Trink.

I love Austrian whites, although occasionally (In this century) I can find a few a little ponderous or hot. But that's never happened with Gobelsburg. And pricing isn't usually too bad.

Yes, I think the same thing too. Just never enough time to drink all the wine! And I know what you mean about that distinct elegant richness. Sounds great!
