WTN: 2020 Schmitges Riesling Trocken

by wnissen » Sat Jan 11, 2025 10:23 pm

A high-value choice at US$17 for a liter, citrus-driven but still friendly. I think there's a hint of RS but it drinks tangy and pure. Full-bodied for riesling and a bit of signature Schmitges skin contact for added aroma and texture. The kind of wine I could drink with lunch every day for a year and not get tired of it. Mosel.

Not familiar with Schmitges , and this seems to only be on West Coast. You mention signature skin contact so I guess it's a producer you see a lot of? Thanks for notes, hopefully will see some at some point.

Several years ago I was able to get some 2004s from Schmittges, but haven’t seen it much since then.

It is so funny how we all have our own perspectives based on what's available near us. Our local German specialist, Dee Vine Wines sells a lot less at retail than they used to, but they have a range still available:

This particular bottle was from K&L Wines, sold out now. I've had some outstanding GG from Edener Praelat from Schmitges, natural yeasts and just a hint of skin contact. Wouldn't say it's a producer that I buy every year, but certainly one of my favorites.
