Any Interesting Xmas Wine Plans?

by Bill Spohn » Wed Dec 25, 2024 12:58 pm

While Herself goes off to do duty at her relatives place for Christmas , I stay home and rummage through the cellar, to find something that will work with the lamb I have planned for my dinner - thinking 1990 Bourgneuf or a 1990 Chauvin - though both may be getting a bit long in the tooth. Anyone tried them lately?

I’ve been opening outdated stuff from dad’s cellar all day. Have a nice Barolo pulled for dinner though.

So has it been going - well, or spotty? Sometimes you get nice surprises from wines that might be on the old side (and sometimes not).

As expected. Even the wines that are tasty on opening collapse shortly thereafter. Only the truly fine wines (of which there are also many) have stood the test of time.

Sorry to link elsewhere, but see here for the full accounting: https://www.wineberserkers.com/t/tales- ... lar/297918

Ah - a lot of older whites there, which I'd expect to be a tad dated, but that Merlot sounded decent (I've never tasted a Virginia wine!)

Good luck with the rest (assuming you haven't finished yet). At least you'll harvest some memories, considering the source.

Not here! Had a rough week. Opened two older Bordeauxs (La Confession St Em and a Clerc Milon) for non-Bordeaux drinking guests, including one who announced that he'd started on dry January already. Wasn't exactly the wildest night of my life. :)

Oops - what vintages. I have 2001 Confession and 88, 89, 90, 95 Clerc Milon - tell me it wasn't any of those......

Would be (academically) interested in how the Bourgneuf is doing. I drank a bunch of '90 Bourgneuf-Vayron (exact same wine, just different labelling for some Euro markets) years ago, always enjoyed.
Lastnight 7 fishes, so all whites/rose/bubblies. Tonight was at BILs, my wines included an 00 La Lagune, not really a food match but you can't have Christmas without claret

Nope, none of those! 02 and 04 respectively.

2002 can be pretty tough on Right Bank. Was that the first vintage?

Yes. But the wine was fine, just not as giving as a bottle of same in 2021 especially compared to the Clerc Milon which was very good in 2004.
