- 1991 Dönnhoff Grauburgunder Eiswein - Germany, Nahe (12/22/2024)
Opened by a dear friend, this was a marvel of complexity, as well as a miracle of vinous perseverance. 1991 was a difficult year where Kabinett was a luxury, but then an Eiswein harvest came calling. I last had this maybe 15 years ago, and frankly expected something much further along the “old caramel and orange peel” curve. Instead, despite the color of well used motor oil, the wine conveyed candied pineapple and spiced molasses aromas, and a ripping dose of acidity that could wake the dead. No shortage of flavor, as the wine kept putting forward different elements, whether spices, sugars, or fruits. Truly a fascinating bottle.
