WTN: In memory of Thor

by David M. Bueker » Sat Dec 21, 2024 11:25 pm

Today was the memorial luncheon for Thor Iverson. It was a raucous affair which would have pleased him. There were tons of wines, but a few really stood out. This was one, and with Thor’s great love of all things Trimbach, it seems an appropriate note to mark the occasion. I only got a small pour before Theresa’s mom commandeered the bottle for her table, but that small pour was etched in stone.

  • 2001 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile - France, Alsace (12/21/2024)
To my taste there is no better dry Riesling than CFE when it is on form. This bottle was 100% on form, loaded with dry extract that conveyed immense depth, and balanced by its acidity to provide lift. It’s a marble statue in wine form.

I think I have heard this presumed preference for CFE over CSH before. But I forget the details, as I don't drink much Trimbach! What is it you prefer about CFE? I guess your wallet thanks you, given the price differential.

CFE tends to be a slightly richer palate expression to CSH, at least to my taste. I sometimes find CSH to be almost too precious.

I'm surprised there weren't a dozen of them!

There were tons of wines but I only really paid attention to a few. It was more a chance for me to speak to people, including Theresa than to focus on the wines.

How's Theresa doing. Still in London?

I love the 2001 CFE (though have had a couple premoxed, last was great).
Fitting tribute to Thor.

Yep. Remarried a few years ago. Very happy.
