  • 2004 Quinta do Casal Branco Ribatejo Falcoaria Reserva - Portugal, Ribatejano, Ribatejo (3/12/2007)
Jammy and oaky, but with nice savoury wine underneath the superficially sweet layer. The palate is big and sweet and I can see its appeal, but it wasn't a wine that I like.
  • 2005 Veracruz Verdejo Rueda Ermita - Spain, Castilla y León, Rueda (3/12/2007)
A nice nose, rather grassy and Sauvignonny yet with a sunny fruitiness to it. The palate is rather too weighty and it isn't as fresh and zippy and the past vintages have been. It's not bad, but it is more cumbersome than I would like it to be. Normally I've gone through several bottles of this a year, I think with the 2005 one will be enough. I also miss the minerality I've had in past vintages.
  • 1994 Beringer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Private Reserve - USA, California, Napa Valley (3/10/2007)
Dark, still youthful colour. The nose is typical Cab in its cassis and sweetly fruity notes with a touch of coffee-like oak. It has a slight, refreshing rhubarb scent also. The palate is big, sweet yet nicely structured. A rather pleasant Cab that is starting to drink well. It still seems a bit tannic and too primary so I would hold it a couple years more for the secondary notes to arrive.

+ Alvear Pedro Ximenez Solera 1927 which was thick and sweet and loads of fun. I have a sweet tooth so I was able to go throught the whole half bottle with the aid of only two other people. And that's no mean achievement for a wine with 400g/l RS.

We tried drinking a Santa Rita Medalla Real Cabernet Sauvignon 2003 but it was corked. In the fleeting instant before taint takes over, it seemed like a rather nice wine, with some hot area characteristics but still more an "elegant" type of wine. It wasn't only rhubarb jam like so many Chilean Cabs are.

I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
