WTN: Bordeaux Focus - Fabulous 1999 Pichon Baron

by David M. Bueker » Mon Dec 16, 2024 10:55 pm

  • 1999 Château Pichon-Longueville Baron - France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac (12/16/2024)
What a wonderful wine! 1999 is not well thought of as a vintage, but this wine is classic Bordeaux in every sense of the word. Moderate fruit levels, no trace of alcoholic heat, beautiful cedar and earth tones, and just a hint of tobacco. Tannins are still there, but they are a bit player. Overall the wine is quite silky in texture, with layers of flavor, and a finish that requires a calendar rather than a stopwatch. If I was asked to put forward a classic Bordeaux I might very well pick this wine. Drink now or anytime over the next 10-20 years.

that sounds terrific. appreciate the note - I've been wondering when to break into one of my '99 Palmers, this note has me thinking I should pop one in the next year or so.

If you have more than one I would try it.

Palmer was generally considered the wine of the vintage, but the PBaron sounds nice.
99 was kinda "California" - ripe and soft, but it wasn't roasted like 2003

Bought 3 bottles, years ago. They've been sitting at Horse Ridge nearly a decade, it was too young when I bought it but I recall you had a lot of praise for that wine when I got an offer (at a very good price then) and suggested I be patient.

Nothing roasted about this Baron. Of course roasted in 1999 isn’t anything like roasted from 2003 forward.
